[Wrap-Up] August 2019

Wrap-Up for August 2019

Phew August was a crazy month! We were so busy with house-related things that I hardly had any spare time to read. Since starting this blog, this was by far my most inactive month. I am hoping to get back into the swing of things soon!

Alex and I started August by attending his family reunion! It was my first time meeting many people on this side, so that was fun. The event was held in a park near a lake, so of course we had to go stand in the water!

NH Pond

Alex also surprised me with a date night where we headed to the ocean! We kept saying we’d make a beach trip this year, but just kept getting too busy. Our time there was a bit short, but I’m SO grateful that we went!

By The Sea

Next up was our weekend in Waterville Valley! It was beautiful and so nice to be around friends all weekend, per usual.

Waterville Valley, NH

This month, my old co-worker and author published his THIRD book! I cannot wait to dive in! If you enjoy non-fiction about the outdoors, check out his author page here.

This month, Alex and I officially became homeowners! The process was so crazy, but it all went much faster than we expected! Of course, this took up most of my time this month, and September will be the same as we work on projects and get settled in. But my goodness, it feels so good to have our own space!!

Homeowners

On our first night in the house, we celebrated by drinking one of the bottles of wine that our friends, Andy and Carina, gifted to us for our engagement.

I also maaaay have gotten a jump start on my fall decorating 🙂

On a sad note, we lost one of my favorite people this month.

Alice Girvin was the only person who truly understood my obsession with polar bears. 💙 I can still remember the day she found out that they were my favorite animal! I was invited over to her home to check out her collection. I was so young and my collection at that point was mainly stuffed animals. When I saw her collection, I couldn’t wait to get older and buy things just like hers!

Over the years, Mrs Girvin and I traded letters and cards. Of course they were almost always polar bear related! (The photo below shows only a handful that I have!)

polar bear notes and cards

Just a couple of weeks ago, I received a package from Mrs Girvin for my birthday. Inside, there was a handwritten note on polar bear stationary of course! In the letter, she explained how she was gifting me a fun polar bear magnet and a couple of cards. The cards she had bought to give to Mr Girvin, but after his passing, she wanted me to gift them to Alex when appropriate. How thoughtful and amazing?! Also in this letter, she explained how she was gifting me her two ceramic polar bears, hoping that I can give them a new home.

I’m so heartbroken that I won’t be able to show Mrs Girvin photos of the bears in our new house, but I am honored that she wanted to gift them to me! I am so grateful that I was able to be good friends with such amazing person. I will always think of her whenever I see a polar bear.

Without further delay, let’s dive in to my monthly wrap-up!

Monthly Musings

Watching:

Lost Boys (1987 Film) – 4/5
Oh my gosh! I cannot believe it took me this long to watch this film! I really enjoyed it! The acting was a little odd, and some of the situations were a little cheesy, but that didn’t take away from the fun! I LOVED Sam who was played by Corey Haim. I would definitely recommend this one to vampire fans that haven’t seen this one yet!

Aquaman (2018 Film) – 2/5
Alex and I finally gave this one a try. I didn’t hate it, but I certainly wouldn’t watch it again. The camera work was horrible for me as I can’t do anything with spinning. My gosh… the number of times the camera spun around the characters for dramatics! This movie also had a number of repetitive things that started making us laugh, like starting EVERY single fight with a sudden explosion. It was a VERY pretty movie though! Worth watching once, but go in with low expectations.

Playing:

During our Waterville weekend, we played a lot of What Do You Meme! I love that game. We were all laughing so hard!

Drinking:

This month, I had a ton of caffeine to help get me through; mostly black tea, green tea, and Pepsi! Phew!

Listening to:

This month I cruised through a new podcast that my coworker and friend, Kate, recommended to me; Root of Evil. It’s about the family of the man that may have killed Elizabeth Short in the case known as the Black Dahlia Murder. This podcast was so difficult to listen to, but also very interesting. I definitely recommend it to fans of true crime.

In the bookish community:
THE GIRL WHO LOVED TOM GORDON IS BEING ADAPTED! I cannot wait. This is my FAVORITE Stephen King novel! I can’t wait to learn about the casting!

Monthly bookish related haul:

By backing the awesome Our Final Halloween project, I had only requested book one and two, but the organizer sent me all of these goodies! I’m so grateful! I cannot wait to have my library set up so I can start displaying stuff like this!

Book of the Month:

I have run out of gifted credits for BOTM. I’m considering joining up and paying as I go, but with all the things we need for the house, it may have to wait a bit.

Book Club:

I was unfortunately too busy to go to my book meet up again this month.

My favorite bookish photo this month:

In Case You Missed It:

  • [Tea Review] Tea Break White Tea
  • WE BOUGHT A HOUSE!

Looking forward to:

We’re going to be so busy again this month, but there’s a lot of fun planned as well! Alex and I will be celebrating our first wedding anniversary, we’re headed to King Richards Fair, and later in the month, we’re going to Disney World!

Thanks for reading!

How was your month? Have any special plans for September? I’d love to hear about them in the comments section below!

I’m a big fan of the Lost Boys! It was one of my favourite films in my early teenage years! I had such a crush on Kiefer Sutherland! I’m not greatly keen to watch Aquaman as much as I like Jason Mamoa. I have no time for Amber Heard and don’t want to watch anything she is in!

I definitely need to watch Lost Boys again soon! I can’t believe it took me so long to see it! And yeah… I wasn’t a fan of her acting at all.

I originally learned who he was after seeing him participate in the KillerCon 2020 Virtual Event. I went to follow him and his publishing house, Perpetual Motion Machine (that he runs with Lori Michelle), immediately after his reading.

Within the PMM publishing house, they also have the imprint, Ghoulish Books, which launched in January of 2022. Max’s latest book, Maggots Screaming!, launched today April 12th, 2022 from that imprint. In celebration, I’m so excited to be sharing this interview with Max!

Diaries of the Damned by Ivan Radev is a collectio Diaries of the Damned by Ivan Radev is a collection of tales that span numerous dark fears. But as always, even in the darkness, there’s a bit of light.

In the foreword, the author warns that this is a book of fears, and boy does he play on fears wonderfully! Each tale is presented to readers in the first person to really get readers in the characters shoes. Please use caution here when you dive in. The author does not shy away from the darkness.

Phew, this read will take readers on quite the journey! It was the perfect read for a dark and rainy spring weekend.
