[Short Story Review] Out At Sea by Aiden Merchant

September 7, 2020      Erica Robyn      6 Comments

Out At Sea by Aiden Merchant is a brutal short story set out on the ocean in freezing temperatures. Grab a warm beverage and prepare yourself before diving into this one!

Full Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This did not affect my rating in any way. I also purchased a copy!

Let’s dive in!

My Thoughts on Out At Sea by Aiden Merchant

The main character, Denver, has recently joined a a fishing crew doing odd jobs on the ship. While still getting his sea legs and dealing with freezing temperatures, Denver is spooked by thumping noises. His cousin, the captain, tells him that it’s just the waves hitting the boat.

But when the caption goes on deck to take a look and doesn’t return, Denver fears for the worst.

He could never have imagined the reason why he cousin didn’t return…

This is a short story that packs a major punch! The author sets the scene immediately and dives right into the action. I was so hooked! I was so nervous about what was going to happen next with each and every scene!

My Favorite Passages from Out At Sea

**SLIGHT SPOILERS BELOW**

Denver tried to speak but found that he couldn’t. He was panicking now, the cold rushing down his throat and burning his insides.

He thought nothing of the sound at first, but then a chill shot down his spine. Something in the air had changed, getting his attention. A warning.

His torso had been torn open and devoured like a baked potato, leaving chunks and blood all over the floor.

My Final Thoughts on Out At Sea

Filled with terror and suspense, this one will have you holding your breath!

If you enjoyed Into The Drowning Deep by Mira Grant, you will love this one!

I originally learned who he was after seeing him participate in the KillerCon 2020 Virtual Event. I went to follow him and his publishing house, Perpetual Motion Machine (that he runs with Lori Michelle), immediately after his reading.

Within the PMM publishing house, they also have the imprint, Ghoulish Books, which launched in January of 2022. Max’s latest book, Maggots Screaming!, launched today April 12th, 2022 from that imprint. In celebration, I’m so excited to be sharing this interview with Max!

Diaries of the Damned by Ivan Radev is a collectio Diaries of the Damned by Ivan Radev is a collection of tales that span numerous dark fears. But as always, even in the darkness, there’s a bit of light.

In the foreword, the author warns that this is a book of fears, and boy does he play on fears wonderfully! Each tale is presented to readers in the first person to really get readers in the characters shoes. Please use caution here when you dive in. The author does not shy away from the darkness.

Phew, this read will take readers on quite the journey! It was the perfect read for a dark and rainy spring weekend.
