My Quest for a Natural Deodorant That Actually Works

July 11, 2019      Erica Robyn      16 Comments

Today I have a rather random post to share with you all: my quest to find a natural deodorant that actually works!

It’s been quite the journey and I’ve spent a chunk of change on this quest… Some deodorants that I tried worked semi-well, while others didn’t work for me at all. Though I am happy to say that I found two that I really enjoy!

Of course, everyone’s system will react to products like this differently. But since I spent so much time with this, I figured I’d share with you all in the hopes that it helps at least one person!

Let’s dive in!

My Quest to Find a Natural Deodorant That Actually Works

Native Coconut and Vanilla
Aluminum free, paraben free, cruelty free
Has fragrance
This one hurt to put on and it left an awful residue. It also stopped working after just 20 minutes of having it on while around the house. I disliked this one so much I didn’t give it a second try.

Schmidt’s Rose and vanilla
Aluminum free, artificial fragrance free, paranormal free
This one smells horrible once it was on. I don’t know what the deal was. The rose just smelled so bad. This one also caused irritation for me almost immediately and left a nasty residue. Definitely my least favorite of the bunch! I didn’t give this one a second try either.

Toms 24 Hour Odor Protection Wild Lavender
Aluminum free, paraben free, artificial fragrance free, cruelty free
This one smells okay but it’s definitely a little more natural smelling than I prefer,  if you know what I mean. The lavender is really strong. This one worked for me for a while but only when I wasn’t sweating too much. I ended up using most of the stick before switching up to another one.

Equate Beauty Apricot
Aluminum free, paraben free, cruelty free
Has fragrance
This one smells amazing. The apricot is really nice and refreshing. But unfortunately while the package says you can compared to Tom’s of Maine, this one did not work for me. I gave this one two weeks before switching it up.

Love Beauty and Planet Murumuru Butter and Rose Deodorant
Aluminum free, paraben free, cruelty free, plant-based, vegan
I really like this one. It smells absolutely amazing, and even acts almost like a perfume as well. So the scent is pretty strong but it’s really nice! It goes on really well and didn’t cause any irritation. I do find myself putting this one on again after my yoga class at lunchtime to freshen up, but otherwise it works pretty well. Though it doesn’t work all of the time, hence the freshening up.  But I’m still using this one and I’d like to try the different types of this brand at some point.

Kopari Coconut Oil Deodorant
Aluminum free, non-GMO, vegan
This was the first natural deodorant I tried, and I absolutely loved it for a really long time. It smells amazing, it goes on really well, and it lasts reasonably well. Unfortunately, it stopped working for me when I got towards the bottom of the container. I still use this one at night time or on weekends. One last note, this was by far the most expensive of the natural deodorants I tried.

Secret Honeydew Deodorant
Aluminum free
So far from what I’ve tested, this is the deodorant that has no aluminum that works the best. This one also doesn’t have any dyes. It smells really nice, but it makes me feel a bit like a middle school girl again with the honeydew scent. While this one works the best out of them all, it still doesn’t work for me all the time. The ingredients listed on this one are mostly words that I don’t recognize, where the ingredients on many of the others were more readable, so this one still isn’t exactly what I was hoping to find.

My Favorites

I would consider trying the Secret brand again, but not the honeydew because that was not for me.

From this, the deodorants that I would definitely buy again is the Love Beauty and Planet. I’d purchase the rose scented again, but I’m also curious about the other options!

Thanks for reading!
While my quest will be put on hold for awhile (so I don’t keep throwing money away, and who has time to deal with deodorant that doesn’t work in the summer?!), I’ve still got a running list of other types I’d like to try. So I’d love to hear about your experiences and add to my list!

Ahh, my mom has been on a similar quest because she’s allergic to everything. I’m forwarding this post to her, thanks!

Thanks for sharing your journey on this. So many deodorants make me break out in a rash so finding one that works well and doesn’t irritate my skin is always such a challenge. I might have to give that Secret one or your other favorite a try to see how they do for me.

Ugh getting a rash under your arms is the absolute worst!! I hope you find one you like! I also just started using a Dove brand on that is aluminum free and that’s going well so far! I love Dove products.

    What an interesting post!
I have been using Thai crystal deodorant stone for years. It’s 100% natural mineral salts and it’s fragrance free, non-staining and kills bacteria. I love it because it really works well.
The only different thing about this compared to other deodorant is that you wet the stone and apply it liberally. With regular deodorant you just apply it to your pits. The extra step is fine with me if it works!

I’ve never tried a natural deodorant…but I appreciate all the feedback. I might need to switch it up some and find something that really really works.

It’s a struggle to find something that works for your specific body type and stress levels for sure! There were plenty of days where I came home from work and showered immediately lol!

This is quite a journey! I’ve tried several kinds, but I find that most don’t hold up under pressure. I actually like the Schmidt’s lavender scent. It doesn’t give me a rash at all and seems to work pretty well.. I haven’t tried their other scents.

I used to use the crystal kind but then I read somewhere that it’s actually another form of aluminum. I don’t know much about that but I decided to try other things.

I’m putting the Love Beauty and Planet on my list! I use the Tom’s, and I really like the smell, but I hate the pilling. Did you experience that with all of them? Everyone I know complains about that with natural deodorant. Totally worth it, though!

Oh! With some, yes definitely. I don’t think it was too bad with the Love Beauty and Planet though, if I’m remembering correctly! It was REALLY bad with the Native brand.

Oh good luck with this! I had a coworker that used the native one, but that seemed like a bust for you

Yeah… I may have to try a different type of that one. Maybe there was just something odd going on with the one I picked.

I have a lot of skin allergies – Tom’s is one of the only ones I can use.
