Let’s dive in!
My Thoughts on The Raven by Susan McCauley –
Struggling just to survive after everything life has handed them, a man uses traps in the woods to try to get some meat on the table. One day, he accidentally traps and kills his wife’s favorite bird, a raven. Fearing that this is a bad omen, he brings the bird back so his family can eat anyway, reasoning that it wasn’t all for naught. But that’s just scratching the surface of the terrible darkness that’s about to enter their home.
Starvation. Illness. Death. Just three bearers of the darkness that take up residence.
Can anything save this family?
My GOSH, things start off pretty dark, and only get more and more intense from there. The sudden drops of certain information that hit here time and time again were absolute gut punches. There were many times that I shouted right out loud while reading. Every time I didn’t think things could get worse, they did…
The focus on corruption of people in power was an especially tough element to read while in our current political landscape here in the US.
The flow of the story overall was a bit on the slower side, but boy did it work well! Because it wasn’t super fast-paced, the dread and dreariness was that much more potent.
My Favorite Passages from The Raven –
I DIDN’T WRITE ANY DOWN! I’m SO bummed. This tale had some passages that are still haunting me.
My Final Thoughts on The Raven –
I cannot caution you enough with trigger warnings. If you’re sensitive to certain topics, please tread lightly. For those that want to brave it, buckle in for one doozy of a tale. I breezed through this, so nervous to see what was to come of this poor family next.
