My 2023 Reading Stats

January 16, 2024      Erica Robyn      2 Comments

Oh, 2023! I always love seeing how my stats break out each year, and this year had some fun data!

If you’re a fan of analytics like me, I hope you’ll love this!

Let’s dive in!

My 2023 Book Survey – What I Read:

My genre percentage when it comes to horror jumped up again, coming in this year at 97.3%! My other genres were limited this year as I had yet again really zeroed in on my horror to-read pile.

To make this chart a little more interesting, I tracked sub-genres as well for 2023.

Supernatural horror lead the way for my reading by genre, coming in at 20.8%! Short Story Collections and Anthologies were the next two biggest chunks; 18.9% and 15.1%.

My Format stats are some of my favorites! While I read a good amount of paperbacks (31.9%), the digital ARC’s were a pretty close second (26.5%)! I anticipated this as I worked to get through as many outstanding reviews as possible while preparing to take a break. My audiobook percentage rules! It’s up to 7.1% from just 0.9% last year. I’m looking forward to listening to more audiobooks in 2024.

For Length, 2023 was the year of the Novella! This worked out wonderfully as my attention span was rocky all year. Being able to sit and read a novella from start to finish felt extra amazing.

For Page Length, the biggest chunk of my reading was in the 100-199 range! Interesting to see I had a few in the 400-499 range as well!

Per usual, most of my reading was from books that came out during the year. I did get to several books from 2022 that I had been meaning to read as well. And while I say this every year… THIS year may finally be the year I actually follow through; my goal is to read a lot of what I own but haven’t yet read during 2024!

No surprises here! I love seeing all of those 5-star reads! Stay tuned for my list of favorite reads! I only had two 2-star reads, and yet again, those are books I would still recommend to others, they were just not for me! I only ended up DNFing two books this year as well!

September was a month where I was just so miserable in pregnancy, I could hardly move! Thank goodness I had plenty of books to keep me distracted! That month, I read 19 books!

The Publisher chart! Always the most colorful, this is the one I look forward to the most. I read from 61 different publishers in 2023, up ten from last year! And for the self-publishing folks, I read from 14 different authors!

My 2023 Book Survey – What I Acquired:

I acquired over 140 books in 2023, most of which were purchases. In the next chart below, I break down where the purchases were made.

Breaking down the Acquisition Location chart, I love seeing the direct-from-author segment leading the way at 39.5%! Of course, Little Ghosts Books (16.3%) and Gibson’s Bookstore (13.2%) were the top two bookstores I purchased books from. My direct-from-publisher segment was pretty impressive as well at 14%!

I was very pleased to see that Amazon was only 2.3%! I love that I was able to get ebooks directly from more publishers and authors this year than in previous years!

Thanks for reading!
What stats do you track year over year? Wishing you all a very happy reading year in 2024!

This is fun! I love some of these categories. Christmas horror, cosmic horror, witches… I need more of those. 🙂

    Happy New Year! 🙂
