[Book Blogger Hop] Cluttered Blogs

July 13, 2018      Erica Robyn      32 Comments

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer, where you answer a question and join a “hop”. The purpose is to help bloggers discover and get to know one another.

For this week’s question, Elizabeth @ Silver’s Reviews asks:

Does a cluttered blog have you not returning? By cluttered I mean too many columns, small type, too many photos, difficult to follow, etc.

My answer:

ABSOLUTELY. I cannot stand cluttered blogs.

I greatly prefer the more simple ones that are just two columns; one for the main blog post content, and a simple sidebar with the important information.

I also think people need to be very careful with their photos. I don’t mind when a bunch are uploaded, but they need to be properly sized. If the image is so large that I have to scroll to see the whole thing, then the image is too big.

In fact, there are many reasons why I would navigate away from a blog almost immediately. Check out my top seven reasons why I won’t follow a blog.

Thanks for reading!
How do you feel about cluttered blogs?

Cluttered blogs do not have me returning. I like neat and orderly.

I like two columns, headers dividing each section, and not a lot of photos.

Thanks for sharing the question on Twitter.

Iโ€™m going to check out your top seven reasons why you wonโ€™t follow a cluttered blog.

Yeah, cluttered bothers me, too. Or when it's hard to navigate and I can't distinguish individual posts.

    Ooh interesting question.
I think not, because I follow around 250 blogs. When you first start you're not set on your style and I still want to support people even if their blog needs work.

Great point!! I have a list on Feedly of blogs I want to support, but don't like the formatting. I check that list out every now and again to see if things have changed ๐Ÿ™‚

I think cluttered jobs definitely make it harder to follow them. I don't mind pictures and graphics but like you said, they need to be size appropriately. I do like to support new bloggers though so if it's something I think I can tolerate, I'll visit them for a while to see if their content connects!

I don't like dark backgrounds. I find them hard to read. A lot of flashing or video also bugs me.

Now I'm paranoid our blog is cluttered! I live my life cluttered, I think our blog is the only organized thing. I can understand the pictures too big. I hate when I can't find the most recent posts. Some blogs are laid out so awkwardly that it's hard to navigate.

What gets me more than clutter is text that's in a color that makes if difficult to read, graphics that you have to scroll through to see like you mentiined, and when it's difficult to differentiate between posts.

I do think that appearance makes a huge difference and I prefer blogs that don't appear cluttered. That being said I do want to see different layouts and style that express the blogger's taste. It would be pretty boring if all blogs looked the same ๐Ÿ™‚

Great points. I also hate it when images are too big for the space and start overlapping everything else, especially when it's so easy to fix/control.

I prefer two columns too! It's hard for me to focus on the content where there are three columns and a whole bunch of images and colors and stuff everywhere.

Totally agreed, there are quite a few blogs that I just can't read because there are too many flashing things to pull my eye away. Sometimes things like instapaper help though.

Yes, if a blog's Home page is too dark or their font is too small, then there is little chance I'll come back as often. I have poor eyesight (farsighted on my left, nearsighted on my right), so if the font is too small or cluttered with too many ads, then I won't read the rest of your blog. Just my opinion.

There are definitely things I don't like – such as difficult font/coloring, making it hard to read your blog. I probably have a looser idea of what cluttered means to me though – I'm pretty forgiving. LOL

Within the PMM publishing house, they also have the imprint, Ghoulish Books, which launched in January of 2022. Maxโ€™s latest book, Maggots Screaming!, launched today April 12th, 2022 from that imprint. In celebration, Iโ€™m so excited to be sharing this interview with Max!

Diaries of the Damned by Ivan Radev is a collectio Diaries of the Damned by Ivan Radev is a collection of tales that span numerous dark fears. But as always, even in the darkness, thereโ€™s a bit of light.

In the foreword, the author warns that this is a book of fears, and boy does he play on fears wonderfully! Each tale is presented to readers in the first person to really get readers in the characters shoes. Please use caution here when you dive in. The author does not shy away from the darkness.

Phew, this read will take readers on quite the journey! It was the perfect read for a dark and rainy spring weekend.
