A tablet lies on dry grass and surrounded by dandelions in a natural outdoor setting. The screen displays the cover of the book Everybody Is in the Place by Emma J. Gibbon. The cover features a colorful, fantastical illustration of a female figure with glowing eyes and curved horns, holding something mysterious in her hands. Stars and swirling cosmic elements fill the background, giving the cover a magical and otherworldly feel. The title text is in bold, colorful letters across the top and middle, with the author's name at the bottom.

Reading Wrap-Up for August 2017

Phew! What a month. I started off really strong, but then ran into a bit of a reading slump toward the end of the month. Even so, I read a bunch of really awesome books this month!

Let’s dive in!

My Reading Breakdown for August:

  • 5 Stars- 7
    • A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, Jim Kay (Illustrator), Siobhan Dowd (Conception)
    • Fahrenheit 451: The Authorized Adaptation by Tim Hamilton
    • Final Girls by Riley Sager
    • Here and Gone by Haylen Beck
    • Mission in a Bottle: The Honest Guide to Doing Business Differently–and Succeeding by Seth Goldman, Barry J. Nalebuff
    • The Dark by Lemony Snicket, Jon Klassen (Illustrations)
    • The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick) by Seth Godin
  • 4 Stars- 3
    • Bet You Didn’t Think MS Could Look This Good: The Ramblings of a Medicated Mind by Lisa A. Baeringer
    • Humbug Witch by Lorna Balian
    • You’ll Never Know, Dear by Hallie Ephron
  • 3 Stars- 1
    • The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter–And How to Make the Most of Them Now by Meg Jay
  • 2 Stars- 1
    • True East by Raymond Ahrens
  • 1 Star- 0
  • DNF- 2
    • Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero
    • See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt
I am still SO bummed about these two DNF’s. I had been looking forward to those books for months!! I even had a lovely photo of See What I Have Done that I took on our weekend away… so it doesn’t go to waste, I’ll share it with you all here:

Monthly Musings:

  • Watching:
    • A Monster Calls
      • What an incredible adaptation!! Click here to read my full review!
    • Voltron
      • I LOVE this show so much!
    • Dunkirk
      • Incredibly stressful to watch, but an amazing film! I highly recommend giving it a watch.
    • Van Helsing (Netflix series)
      • SO horrible. Poor acting, flat storyline, and the vampires were wicked lame. I had to bail on the show after only a couple of episodes. πŸ™
    • Fahrenheit 451 (1966)
      • Check out my review here!
    • Dark Tide (2012)
      • This movie was so awful. The acting was pretty lame and the storyline was super predictable. The only element that made this worth watching was Mark Elderkin, who played the character of Tommy.
    • Power Rangers (2017)
      • Some of the dialogue was a bit lame, but over all I really enjoyed this movie!! Billy rules!
    • Playing:
      • Kubb– This is such a fun outdoor game! I highly recommend buying or making a set if you’re looking for something fun and a little different from typical lawn games!
      • One Night Ultimate Werewolf– On our trip to the White Mountains, we played this game for HOURS one night. I’m so bad at lying, so I’m pretty awful at this game but I still had lots of fun!
    • Drinking:
      • I’ve been so hooked on Honest Tea beverages. Specifically the Raspberry Black Tea.
    • Listening to:
      • My Favorite Murder (Podcast)- I’m still binge listening to this one!
    • In the bookish community:
      • This was the final month of the Summer Commenting Challenge hosted by Lonna @ FLYLΔ“F and Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense. For the month of August, I was paired with Barb of Booker T’s Farm: Books & Nails & Puppy Dog Tales. I’ve had a great time getting to know her and will definitely be staying in touch well after the challenge ends! I highly recommend giving her blog a peek!
    • Looking forward to:
      • Alex’s sister is getting married in September and I cannot wait for her big day!

Wow, 7 five star reads is a great month. However, you have me very afraid to start Meddling Kids. Your's isn't the first poor mention of it I've seen. I also started See What I Have Done and after the first 30 pages or so, had no trouble putting it down. It isn't technically a DNF but I'm in no hurry to get back to it. I think my favorite movie of the month was Colossal. It was surprisingly good. That werewolf game sounds really fun.

I've enjoyed being paired with you as well and had such a good time with this challenge over the summer. I'll definitely be staying in touch as well!

It certainly was an amazing month!! I think I may try Meddling Kids again in a few years… I just wasn't liking the characters or the storyline. πŸ™

I am SO thankful that the challenge got us together!! It was such a perfect match! πŸ™‚

Looks like you had quite a month!

A friend of mine was just telling me about Van Helsing the other day – I may try it – she said to stick with it because it gets better as it goes along. We'll see! πŸ™‚

Looks like you had a good reading month (not a lot of 1-2 stars) so YAY! *insert confetti*
I saw Dunkirk in theaters and wow it blew me away! Super tense but SUPER good!

You really did read some great sounding books this month, Erica! I really need to make time to read Monster Calls. I am glad you enjoyed Dunkirk. I'd like to see that one of these days. Have a great week, Erica.
