[Book Review] Mission in a Bottle by Seth Goldman & Barry J. Nalebuff

Book Review of Mission in a Bottle by Seth Goldman & Barry J. Nalebuff

During my Trip to the Niantic Book Barn, I discovered this book in a "Business" section of Store Four. The cover was what pulled me in at first, and when I opened it up, I immediately added it to my to-buy stack! Why? Because it's a graphic novel!

Not only did I have SO much fun reading this book, it also convinced me to go out and try Honest Tea, embarrassingly, for the first time. And I warn you... if you haven't tried the teas're going to want to! They are DELICIOUS.

(My thoughts on each drink pictured below is at the end of this post.)

Mission in a Bottle: The Honest Guide to Doing Business Differently--and Succeeding
by Seth Goldman & Barry J. Nalebuff

Part of the Goodreads synopsis:
In an incredibly fun and accessible two-color graphic-book format, the cofounders of Honest Tea tell the engaging story of how they created and built a mission-driven business, offering a wealth of insights and advice to entrepreneurs, would-be entrepreneurs, and millions of Honest Tea drinkers about the challenges and hurdles of creating a successful business--and the importance of perseverance and creative problem-solving.

My thoughts:
This was such a fun read! I cruised through it in just two short sittings. So needless to say, I really enjoyed it!

Seth and Barry's story is so inspirational. I love that the book started at the very beginning so we were able to see how things transformed over time! I will admit that some of the more technical things were a bit dry to me, like the math behind their pricing and such things. But overall, I was hooked. I couldn't stop reading because I just had to know what happened next!

The artwork was lovely! It was so simple, but so intriguing. I really enjoyed the element of humor that was in both the text and the art. For example, when Barry was talking to his class about there being a hole in the market, the artwork showed him in a whirlpool, sinking. Then in the next panel, he's asking the class about bubbles, and he's floating in the air on a bubble! Next, they're talking about packaging and he's swimming in a large pile of bottles!

There were also smaller bits of humor sprinkled throughout. Like this panel:

I also loved that the characters interacted with the artwork from time to time, like this:

My favorite passage:
As a game theorist, I encourage people to truly understand the other party's perspective. When you put yourself in their position, it isn't what you would do wearing their shoes, it's what they would do wearing their shoes. No surprise, but that's much easier said than done, especially when their shoes don't fit you feet or your worldview.

Honest Tea has helped me appreciate that consumers make decisions every day that can tilt the world a little closer to the one we want, rather than the one we live in.

So, what did I think about the teas?

Raspberry Tea- This one is INCREDIBLE! Definitely my number one favorite from the ones I have tried so far. I could drink this all day long! It's not too sweet, but the raspberry is nice and strong. I'm obsessed!

Half Tea Half Lemonade- Absolutely delicious! I would choose this over the Snapple Half & Half any day!

Pomegranate Blue Flavored Herbal Tea- This one is also very delicious! It's another that I will have to make sure we have stocked in our fridge! To me, this one was closer to a juice than all the others.

Cranberry Lemon Flavored Herbal Tea- Another absolutely delicious one! Next time I'd like to mix this one with some seltzer, see how that goes :)

Peach Tea- I enjoyed this one, but I'm just not a huge peach fan. I would absolutely drink this one again, but I would choose the Raspberry one over the Peach.

Honey Green Tea- This one was not for me. But I think that's mainly because I like green tea plain (and hot) so in this case, the honey was too much.

Thanks for reading!
Have you tried any of the Honest Tea drinks yet? If so, which is your favorite?

  1. I've not seen Honest Tea around here but every time a commercial comes on, I look at our pup and say "We have our own Honest T." It's awesome that it was written as a graphic novel. If I see any out, I'll definitely try it. I'm always looking for new beverages, especially since I quite drinking soda a few months ago.

    1. :-D I hope you find a couple different flavors soon!! They're so delicious!

  2. I've been looking for a new graphic novel to try and this sounds like it would fit the bill. I'm not a tea drinker at all, admittedly. I think my husband might like this one as well (and maybe even want to try the tea!).

    1. Awesome!! You may like some of the more fruity flavors like the Pomegranate Blue Flavored Herbal Tea, they taste more like juice than tea! :)

  3. That's a great way to market tea! Love the look of the book, too!

  4. Ohh great review Erica! I never heard about this graphic novel or the tea's, but they sure looks and sounds delicious. I might give these tea's a try one day. Thank you so much for the awesome post Erica.

    1. Thank you!! Definitely give the tea's a try! They're SO good! :)
