[Bookish Platform Feature] The StoryGraph

July 6, 2020      Erica Robyn      20 Comments

Have you heard about The StoryGraph yet? The platform is still in beta, but I just couldn’t wait to dive in and then share with you all!

I first heard about the platform on Twitter and made an account immediately. In this post, I’ll discuss what I’ve learned so far.

Let’s dive in!

My Thoughts on The StoryGraph Platform

When I accessed the website and made an account, the very first thing that I did was figure out how to see my stats!

See Your Reading Stats

To do this, all I needed to do was export my data from Goodreads and then upload it to this platform. The site walks you through it and its very easy to do! Once the upload processes, you can see your reading statistics. I LOVED these stats!

Check out how mine turned out for 2020 so far:

I can’t wait to see how these transform over time!

“Ordered for you” Reading Preferences

The next thing that I looked into was the “Ordered for you” Reading Preferences. By filling out a short survey, this tab allows the platform to recommend what to read next!

Below is what I added for my personal preferences as of today. I was very happy to see that this can be edited at any time to switch things up.

When this was done processing, I was SO excited to see that most of the recommendations were books that are on my radar, with a few I hadn’t heard about yet. This clearly works very well, and I cannot wait to use this moving forward!

Profile

On this page, you can easily access your account if you need to make any edits, what you’re currently reading, how many books you’ve read during the current year, what your reading goal is, what your 5 start reads are, as well as books you’ve read recently.

There’s also a wonderful “What you like to read” section that listed the following for me:

You mainly read fiction books that are dark, adventurous, and mysterious.

You tend to choose fast-paced books that are <300 pages long.

VERY accurate! I love this.

Your Books

In the Your Books tab, I love the very simple layout! Here’s what mine looks like right now:

Clicking any of the book covers opens up a panel that looks like this:

I really like the look of this summary section and that it is totally controlled by the votes of the community. I’m very excited to see how this works as more people use the platform.

Which brings me to my next item-

Reviews!

Of course, this platform also allows you to add reviews. When filling one out, it asks some wonderful questions about the book:

Find A Book

In this tab, it’s basically a search tab that allows you to quickly and easily add books to your lists; To Read, Read, Currently Reading, AND THE BEST BIT- DID NOT FINISH! My goodness, I was so excited to see this option!

The list of books here is organized by books that may be of interest to you. If there’s one listed that you don’t like, you can simply remove it by clicking the ‘x’.

Author Pages

You can access an author page by clicking the author’s name in any window that pulls up the book listing.

Reading Challenges

If you’re a fan of reading challenges, you’ll love this tab! There are so many different challenges listed that you can join!

Community

And lastly, there’s a Community tab that you can switch to view posts from everyone or just the people you follow.

I saw StoryGraph and Book Sloth being promoted around the same time on Twitter. I went with Book Sloth because I understand that The StoryGraph doesn’t have a mobile platform; I hope that’s the plan once it leaves beta mode!

I do like how the StoryGraph analyzes your preferences. You’ll have to keep us updated on your experiences with this platform!

Goodreads isn’t perfect, but I feel like I’ve been using it for so long and I’m so entrenched, that it would be hard to switch to a new platform!

Yeah I totally have that feeling too. I moved all of my stuff over to BookThinkers when they first launched, but they’ve been down to ages now… Hopefully this one is around longer term! For now, I’ll probably be posting to both.

I have been so much about this one too. I was tempted to try it but I heard the import from Goodreads was glitchy, so I thought I would wait it out. Is it any better now?
