The Horror Collection: Sapphire Edition | Book Review

KJK Publishing Presents The Horror Collection: Sapphire Edition is a collection of tales with appalling bullies, horrific discoveries, terrifying situations, brutal sacrifices, and things that can’t be forgotten once seen…

Let’s dive in!

My Thoughts on KJK Publishing Presents The Horror Collection: Sapphire Edition –

This is an anthology in this series that took me FAR too long to get to! These collections are all just too darn good. I’ve been determined to get caught up after my major lull in my reading. From this collection, I had three tales that really jumped out to me for very different reasons, but I loved all the tales here! Even the ones I had to skim read.

My favorites from this collection were:

  • Enjoy Your Show by Christina Bergling
  • The House on Royal Street by Tom Deady
  • Letters to Santa by John Durgin

Here are my notes on each tale!

The Oak by Steve Stred –
Targeted by bullies, this kid is starting to think in drastic measures. When his uncle tells him an odd local legend that may be able to fix the problem, he decides it can’t hurt to try.

Oh, this poor kid. Bullying in stories always makes me so nervous, and here was just brutal.

The House on Royal Street by Tom Deady –
When her father shows her his latest house purchase that he will renovate and sell, she can’t get past its spookiness… especially when they find a newspaper article in the walls.

This was so suspenseful and spooky! I was so nervous during the basement scene, and sure enough, what comes next was horrific! Not knowing all the answers made this even more chilling!

The Noose by Nick Roberts –
After a snap decision is made while drunk, this man goes on the run, believing that he’s a monster… that is, until he learns who the true monster was.

Oh my heart. This poor boy. So glad he got this ending, even if he deserved so much more!

Cursed by R.E. Sargent –
While working at a construction site, this man suddenly hits wood. Carefully digging it out, what he finds underneath is shocking, but unfortunately, what he does next shocks him even more.

Oh, as a reader, you just know this won’t end well from the second this man looks under the plywood.

The Last Meal by Veronica Smith –
Ordering his last meal, this man expects nothing. When he’s served a great meal, he’s shocked. But later, he realizes there was something wrong with the meal…

Not going to lie, I had to skim quite a bit of this tale! Phew!! So brutal and chilling. And then the scenes of violence and loss…

Enjoy Your Show by Christina Bergling –
While watching a moving alone in a theater, this woman is unnerved when a man walks in and sits in the seat directly behind her.

WELP. I’ll never be going to the movies alone!

The Upstairs Neighbour by David Sodergren –
Thrilled to have their own space and start fresh, they’re annoyed to hear that their upstairs neighbor plays an instrument all night. Going wild with lack of sleep and intense anger, the man heads up to confront the neighbor.

Ugh there’s nothing worse than a loud neighbor… this tale took such a sharp turn into anger and violence!

Blueprint by RJ Roles –
Receiving a letter informing him that his uncle had passed and left him his junkyard, this man heads to the space for a few days. Once there, he finds a letter that sends him down a wild path.

Ooooh the one comment from the lawyer had me so ready to learn more! I love the little breadcrumb trail.

Anti-Claus by Graham Masterton –
Picking up an unusual souvenir while on a work trip, this man soon learns that local legends were true, but that’s they also have darkness attached to them.

I had the chance to read this one in The Horror Collection: Christmas Edition, and when I saw it here I was first bummed I didn’t get to read it back when this book came out, but then excited to dive back in! Ugh, the final scene in this man’s home was still so nerve wracking!

In Search of the Blue-Footed Booby by Eric Butler –
Just wanting to get a photo of a rare bird to impress a girl he likes, this guy and his friends stumble across a terrifying scene in the woods that only gets worse.

Phew this was brutal! I read a good chunk of this while waiting in line at the post office and boy I hope the person behind me couldn’t see what I was reading! Haha

Christine and Tracey by Matty-Bob Cash –
After an encounter in the elevator, a young girl reels from the exchange and plots to write a letter to these old women. Meanwhile, the women have some dark plans.

I had to skim some of this. Phew.

Skin Flick by Shaun Hutson –
While trying to enjoy their time at the beach, this man stumbles across some unsettling sights that he tried to deny as some affects from the heat.

Quick and brutal!

Lost in Ephemera by M Ennenbach –
Struggling to let go of the comics and collectibles he loves in order to appease his fiancée, this man is shocked to get a delivery related to his collection.

Phew, this woman was awful! Imagine marrying someone that treats you like this?!

Letters to Santa by John Durgin –
Discovering his letters to Santa really work, this kid decides to give his dad a taste of his own medicine.

Absolutely gut wrenching. This poor kid. I had previously read this in Sleeping In The Fire by John Durgin, and my god, it hit just as hard the second time!

The Long Con by P.J. Blakey-Novis –
Still reeling in grief from the loss of her son, this mother is shocked when he returns from the dead. Determined to get answers, she calls someone to her home.

Tread lightly here if you have triggers around loss. This poor woman. This tale broke my heart over and over again.

The Blood-Witch by Nicola Lombardi –
Rushing into a home to help a woman who says her daughter desperately needs help, this man is shocked at what he sees.

Oh my gosh, this was wildly unsettling! The final two elements of this tale were such a fun and scary addition too!

A Disturbed Sleep by DE McCluskey –
Waking up one night and hearing a strange noise, this man tries to convince himself it was nothing. But things keep getting more and more strange.

My gosh, the way I would have woken my husband up SO fast! I was getting so frustrated with his mindset… but that ending!

All That Glitters by Gord Rollo –
Sent to take out the being that has been preventing these two people from draining the liquid gold they discovered, this man learns exactly what the “gold” was…

Phew this dives in quick and just keeps getting more and more wild!

Blood on the Road by Mike Duke –
While heading out to work, this cop runs into something of nightmares. Luckily, she’s got her trust dog and partner that have her back.

Ugh! Action packed throughout! The gore here is wild!

My Favorite Passages from –

He didn’t need another face to add to the already crowded collection of death stares permanently seared into his memory from the war.
— The Noose by Nick Roberts

The shadows fleeted, and he stepped into the hall, reaching for the light switch. He sensed the danger too late, and the impact of the thing tackling him knocked him off his feet and onto his back.
— Cursed by R.E. Sargent

He was a fifty-three-year-old man, for Christ’s sake; he had absolutely no right to be scared of the closet monster.
Only he was.
He was petrified.
— A Disturbed Sleep by DE McCluskey

“Cops only believe in human monsters…”
— Blood on the Road by Mike Duke

My Final Thoughts on The Horror Collection: Sapphire Edition –

Horror anthology fans… don’t sleep on this one like I did by accident! You need these tales in your brain and haunting your dreams 🙂
