This Wretched Valley by Jenny Kiefer | Horror Audiobook Review

This Wretched Valley by Jenny Kiefer isn’t a subtle story. It’s brutal, wild, and starts with a bang that lets you know things are going to go sideways and makes every step toward that result incredibly nerve-racking.

Let’s dive in!

My Thoughts on This Wretched Valley by Jenny Kiefer, narrated by Megan Tusing –

I have to admit, I picked this one solely off the cover (vibes-based decision, no regrets… mostly ;-D). I had zero idea of what I was walking into, but I couldn’t wait to find out! The narrator of the audiobook, Megan Tusing, did an AMAZING job!

This tale absolutely starts with a bang and the immediate terror really grabs your attention and makes you question what in the world happened there. When the story jumps back in time, you know things are going to go sideways eventually, and the slow build to when they do is intense!

This book follows such a wild, winding story arc. While it slowly steers us toward the terror, the momentum stays strong because you’re just waiting for the shoe to drop and for things to get really bad.

Someone please do a formal count of the f-bombs. This profanity is basically a supporting character that sets the tone. It’s raw, messy, and unapologetically real.

For those who are weary about bodily fluids, tread lightly here. My gosh. There’s So. Much. Throw up. This is certainly not for the weak-stomached. I had to fast forward a few times.

My Favorite Passage from This Wretched Valley –

How could Silvia’s flesh have melted from her bones overnight? Who were the other bodies? What was this place?
Dylan kept her flashlight pointed at Sylvia, passing it over the length of what was left of her body. The underside had melted away from her skeleton, revealing a ribcage full of swelling, rotten organs, before her body too was drowning in the blood that rose like a filling bathtub. The remaining green flesh on her front, floating like an Ophelia, who had languished for months.
Only when the blood covered the tip of Sylvia’s freckled nose, only when it crested her own knees, did Dylan move.

My Final Thoughts on This Wretched Valley –

A messy, loud, and chaotic ride that will leave readers hanging on every page while dreading what’s to come next.
