The September House by Carissa Orlando is a tale of a house crawling with secrets, broken people, and something in the basement that is determined to be set free.
Let’s dive in!
My Thoughts on The September House by Carissa Orlando, narrated by Kimberly Farr –
When a couple, Margaret and Hal, buy a dream Victorian home at an unsettlingly low price, they’re left in awe. But then, during the first September of their lives there, the hauntings begin. Every September, the walls begin to bleed and ghosts of past residents appear.
Margaret absolutely refuses to leave despite everything, but Hal reaches his breaking point and then disappears. Unable to keep the news from their daughter, Katherine announces she’s coming to the house, determined to find her father. Unfortunately for every being involved, Katherine arrives at the start of September. While Margaret tries to keep the secrets of the house hidden, the month goes on, and the hauntings escalate…
My gosh, this is such an interesting premise! On the surface, it’s a haunted-house horror, but underneath, there’s so much psychological tension and general family drama. The unfazed narrator was the most unsettling element of all for me! Margaret was so stubborn, secretive, and strangely yet fiercely attached to the house. These elements all come into play so powerfully toward the end and it had me questioning everything!
What a wild ride! This was SO fun on audio! The narrator, Kimberly Farr, did a killer job!
My Favorite Passage from The September House –
Run? I suggested to my legs, but the air hung heavy, dreamlike, and my muscles were reluctant to comply.
