I CANNOT BELIEVE IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO GET TO THIS ONE. A KJK collection about GHOSTS?! Are you KIDDING?! Of course, I absolutely loved this one!
Let’s dive right in!
My Thoughts on KJK Presents: Ghosts (Classic Monsters #3) –
Every single tale was a hit for me. I had such a good time reading through each of these, and per usual with these collections, I was in awe over the variety these authors covered while still centering around ghosts.
The three tales that really struck me were:
- Claims Report by Candace Nola
- I Faked a Haunting by Christopher Robertson
- Bus Route X39 by Ryan Colley
Per usual, here are my notes on each story!
Nine Lives by Veronica Smith –
While still mourning the loss of her cat, this woman thinks she’s losing it when she begins seeing all of her past cats pop in and out of her home. One evening, after a slew of strange cat behavior that has her on edge, she is awoken to a horrible nightmare.
Oh my gosh, what a fun and terrifying tale to start this collection! I loved the little glimpse that lead to the action of the story!
Claims Report by Candace Nola –
While trying to get a report finished, this woman is faced with a waking nightmare that forces her to ask what her accountability is in everything.
Gosh, Candace can always set quite the scene. I was so nervous to see what was going on, but when we got into the thick of the story, it caught me totally off guard! Terrifying and so sad!
Room within a Room by Michael S. A. Graziano –
Buying an old shower, this man starts to obsess over showering thanks to one bizarre feature: a display showing a woman. He thinks it’s all recorded until she speaks directly to him.
This was such a wild premise, and while filled with hope, it also came off as such a sad tale to me.
Red Celluloid by Brian Moreland –
Getting a call to investigate a film archive building, the ghosts appear soon after the investigation starts, trying to lead this man toward setting them free.
Oh, the darkness here. I was so nervous to see where this tale would take us, and I couldn’t help but speed-read to see what was to come! I was very pleasantly surprised with the ending.
The Scratching by Harrison Phillips –
Still in deep grief over a car accident that took the lives of his wife and young daughter, he finds that when he drinks, he hears a scratching in the walls.
OOFH. The first few pages of this one, I had to skim. So much raw emotion, I couldn’t handle it! The ending had my blood boiling!
I Am Not a Haunted House by Dexter McLeod –
My gosh, not a great time for me to pick this one up, as I had just watched The Lorax with my son. So many feelings at the start of this one, and then through the rest, I just wanted to hug my house!
The spurt of horror toward the end was so wonderfully placed through the rest of this grief horror. What a cool perspective this took!
Ghosts of Randall Farm by Lee Mountford –
A true crime and horror fan who loves learning about true-life hauntings or murders fixates on the Randall Farm. When he is given a chance tied up in a threat to visit, he can’t resist.
My gosh, this was so unsettling. Once the action kicks off, it just gets more and more intense!
The Autopsy by Devin Cabrera –
A corner has a unique job perk; he sees the ghosts of the dead while he is doing their autopsy. Everything was fine with that until this one night.
I was SO tense while reading this one! The setup here, with the narrator’s nonchalant way of saying he sees ghosts, had me so off guard for what was about to happen. A perfect fun tale that jumps to terror.
I Faked a Haunting by Christopher Robertson –
Oh my GOSH, what a fun twist on a ghost story! No notes here, as you need to go into this one cold. Ohmygosh I loved it so much.
Weighted Blanket by MJ Mars –
Struggling but making progress with therapy, this character is pleased with his progress, even if he still has big hurdles to jump.
Ooooh. That ending! Tales with deaths around or in water always freak me out. This one was so eerie.
Passenger Th13teen by David Owain Hughes –
While waiting in a queue for a rollercoaster, its haunted and chilling history is told. But down in the mines, the darkness awaits.
This did not take the path I was anticipating! Phew! Wild and terrifying! I love love love a horror story that has anything to do with carnivals!
Bus Route X39 by Ryan Colley –
While on a bus trying to get home, this passenger feels that things are a bit off…
Oh my gosh, the little bursts of hints at what was to come! So so so well done. This was heartbreakingly terrifying.
My Dead Wife’s Diary by James Kaine –
Grieving over the sudden loss of his wife, this man is shocked to find a mysterious diary that slowly reveals his wife’s secrets.
Ugh, such a heartbreaking story centered around very real-world struggles, mixed in with the spookiness of the journal entries and how they appear. What a tale to end on!
My Favorite Passages from Ghosts –
Before setting off close to the house, Brian observed the dilapidated farmhouse before him. While it was framed by a beautiful orange sky that signalled the arrival of dusk, the building itself looked rather pathetic, as if it were being held together by moss and cobwebs.
— Ghosts of Randall Farm by Lee Mountford
My Final Thoughts on Ghosts –
I keep saying these collections just get better and better… but this one… THIS ONE.
This is the book that I will recommend if anyone ever asks me which of these collections to start with, or which one I loved the most.
Go pick up Ghosts today!
