Bottling His Ghosts by S.H. Cooper is an emotional journey that captures the pain of watching someone you love disappear into their bottles of alcohol and the strength and determination it takes to bring them back.
Plus, there are some seriously terrifying ghosts!
Let’s dive in!
My Thoughts on Bottling His Ghosts by S.H. Cooper –
Netta is already mourning the loss of her husband, and the last thing she needs is more strain and heartbreak. When returning to her childhood home, she learns her brother, Thorn, has developed a drinking problem that has left him in a dire state. Determined to force him to clean up, while also powered by internal strife over the fact that he has everything she wanted but is throwing it all away, Netta goes to him to snap him back into line. But when visiting, she realizes that something is off and soon learns that there’s a very powerful reason why her beloved cousin drinks so much…
The TENSION HERE! My gosh. As a reader, you’ll go through all the emotions with Netta: grief, powerful rage, and jealousy for what could have been, and time and time again, the heartbreak and fear of what they are facing.
The dynamic between Mr. Bentley and Netta was so fun to follow. I loved what a pushover he was when it came to anything she was being stubborn about. But when push came to shove, he was there to protect her no matter what.
The sibling bond was also such a powerful element. I was so nervous for Netta every step of the way, but loved seeing both her and Thorn’s stubbornness play out.
This is a read that was so difficult to look away from. I needed to see how things were going to play out!
My Favorite Passages from Bottling His Ghosts –
By afternoon, the overcast skies made for dreary lighting, painting each room with the sort of grey pallor that plays tricks on the eyes, deepening shadows and highlighting whites just enough to make the ordinary seem uncanny when caught on the edge of one’s vision.
Even Mr. Bentley could only carry on for so long before becoming tired of the sound of his own voice, and once he trailed off, all that was left to ward off the creeping night was the fire’s crackle.
The clock ticked loudly from the mantle, announcing each second as if to mock us with how slowly they seemed to pass.
Loneliness and hopelessness make cracks in the soul that evil is eager to fill.
My Final Thoughts on Bottling His Ghosts –
This book gave me a bit of Thirteen Ghosts vibes, especially in the description of each specter that haunted these pages. Each was incredibly chilling, but the one that asked for mercy absolutely broke me…
Gothic horror fans, you need this book ASAP!
