[Book Blogger Hop] Horror vs Urban Fantasy

October 5, 2018      Erica Robyn      30 Comments

Book Blogger Hop: Halloween Edition!

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer, where you answer a question and join a “hop”. The purpose is to help bloggers discover and get to know one another.

For this week’s question, Maria @ A Night’s Dream of Books asked:

It’s getting close to Halloween. If you HAD to read one of these two genres, which would you prefer — urban fantasy, or horror, and why?

My answer:
Definitely horror for me! Urban fantasy can be a lot of fun, but it’s very hit-or-miss for me. Horror almost never disappoints.

Thanks for reading!
Which genre would you pick?

I'd probably pick horror, it more represents the season for me, but I don't read a ton of either genre!

Horror is my choice too. So many great scenarios I like-summer camp slashers, creature feature, monsters in the woods, creepy theme parks, killer clowns etc! I do enjoy a good urban fantasy but I agree that it often disappoints. Too many wander off in paranormal romance with tropes.

Yesssss!! 🙂 Oh my gosh, paranormal romance is very difficult for me. I've only liked a handful of them that I've read.

Urban fantasy is my favorite genre but I haven’t read it for ages. I haven’t read a lot of horror. Lots of thrillers etc but Not true horror.

Urban Fantasy is hit and miss for me as well, but pretty consistent in what the genre entails. I do prefer the thriller side of horror over UF. (I did go and check out Unbury Carol by Josh Malerman as per your suggestion on reading my by him.)

I read tons of horror in my early teens, but then I went off it and have never really become a fan again.

Yes so much to horror! I only like certain kind of urban fantasy myself, but horror is the genre I reach for consistently this time of year. Happy weekend, Erica!

HORROR any day. I would pick horror over any genre actually. TBH most of them keep me awake at the nights and gives loads of nightmares. Yet I can't get enough of them.

I like this! I'd probably pick horror, although I find they can be hit and miss – I'm a bit picky!
I've found that sometimes urban fantasy can get bogged down by romance, but if you were looking for UF I'd definitely recommend the Rivers of London series.

Diaries of the Damned by Ivan Radev is a collectio Diaries of the Damned by Ivan Radev is a collection of tales that span numerous dark fears. But as always, even in the darkness, there’s a bit of light.

In the foreword, the author warns that this is a book of fears, and boy does he play on fears wonderfully! Each tale is presented to readers in the first person to really get readers in the characters shoes. Please use caution here when you dive in. The author does not shy away from the darkness.

Phew, this read will take readers on quite the journey! It was the perfect read for a dark and rainy spring weekend.
