[Book Blogger Hop] My Book Clubs

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer, where you answer a question and join a "hop". The purpose is to help bloggers discover and get to know one another.

For this week's question, Elizabeth @ Silver's Reviews asks:
How many book clubs do you belong to? If you do belong to an in-person book club, do you have meetings in the day or evening? Do you meet at someone's house or meet at a local restaurant or coffee house?

My answer:
I currently belong to two book clubs!

Lit & Lager
This book club began on August 30th, 2017, and I have been a member since day one! We meet in person once a month, always at a restaurant around dinner time. We've discussed meeting at members houses, but we're waiting to get to know one another a bit more so everyone would be comfortable with it. We all usually get a drink or two along with dinner.

We begin the meetings giving a thumbs up or a thumbs down for the book, without diving into why we voted one way or the other.

Then we jump into an activity of some sort that we keep related to the book but that ideally allows us to get to know one another a bit more. This activity could be a question that everyone is to answer like when we read We Were Liars by E. Lockhart and we brought in three words that best described ourselves.

When we read Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi, the book leader that week (Amber!), brought in little paper houses. We each picked a house from the pile and then found the person who had a matching house to ours and talked about where we were raised.

I hosted the discussion for The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, and I chose to bring in little baggies of gummy worms; some all sour, some all regular, and some were a mix. If you've read this book, you'll understand my humor with this pick.

After the activity, we go around the table picking discussion questions out of a bag. These questions really get the conversation going, but we usually end up talking long after the last question was discussed!

Work Book Club
I also just recently found out that there is a book club at my work! I haven't been to a meeting yet, but I can't wait to go to the first one! We meet during the lunch hour right there in our office.

Thanks for reading!
Do you partake in any book club meet ups?

  2. I want to have a book club near me but the only ones I've found were mostly old ladies obsessed with Jodi Picoult, and that's an author I cannot stand! So yeah... I've not found one. I'm too lazy to start one but I think about it often.

  4. Oh wow, Lit & Lager sounds like SUCH fun. And how cool your work has a book club. I hope you enjoy it. I go to one at my local library - it's YA for Adults and I really love it. :)

  6. Oh, I like the way Lit and Lager runs meetings...I may have to keep that in mind if I find I need to start my own book club and can't just join an existing one.

Have a wonderful weekend. - Katie

  7. Nope, I don't have a book club and I chafe at the idea of having to read a book because that's the book I've been told to read. :(

  9. Oops, my prev comment went missing I think.

I love your book club and it sounds super fun. I am part of a virtual book club where we agree to read two books per month and we vote through Whatsapp. Since most of us in there are book bloggers we review the book on our blogs whenever we can. The main aim is to motivate even the ones who are not blogging as much as they used to, to get back to blogging as well.

  11. Love the sound of your book club and how interactive it is with things being brought in and get-to-know-you activities. And having a book club available at work... genius! Makes me want to explore starting one at my office.

  12. Lit & Lager sounds like a really fun book club! I don't think I could join a book club at work. How is it possible to limit book talk to just an hour during lunch?! I would not be able to get any work done when I have the option to talk about books!

  13. Oh that's nice there's a work one. Our book club does dinner as well then meets at a book club to chat :) Easier than at individual homes for us :)

  14. A friend of mine started one a couple of years ago, and it was fun and lasted for a few months. By the end, hardly any one was even attempting to read anything.
