[Book Review] The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

Book Review of The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert was one of my most anticipated releases for January 2018. While the synopsis sounded really interesting, it was a miss for me.

This is a really short one, but let's dive in.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

Synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother's tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.

My thoughts:
While reading, I was never hooked. I unfortunately wasn't even that interested. I didn't like the characters, the plot fell flat, and I didn't care for the writing style. The pacing was also a bit difficult to keep up with. Some bits dragged on, some felt super rushed, and others were wicked jumpy.

There were so many times that I found myself skimming because I was bored. I should have called it when I realized that I didn't want to pick the book back up whenever I took a break from reading. But of course, I was stubborn and I pushed through.

I don't necessarily regret taking the time to read it. There were a few passages I enjoyed. But overall, this is unfortunately a very forgettable book for me. It hasn't even been 24 hours since I finished reading it and I feel like I'm already struggling to remember anything about it.

My favorite passages:
Because if you’ve spent your whole life running, how do you learn to stand still?

My stepsister was a sexy, zaftig motormouth who made me feel like an awkward breadstick.

An old woman wearing fur and pearly lipstick tried to scowl at me, but Botox took all the mean out of it.

My own nerves were raw as rope, almost rubbed through.

The dodgy pronouns still had me convinced I was walking right into Ron Weasley's worst nightmare.

My final thoughts:
I can definitely see why some people love this book. But this one just wasn't for me.

Thanks for reading!

  3. I had the same reaction to this book. It was so hyped up and I think I was just expecting more. But between the boring first half and the weird second half, there really was nothing great about this novel. I did like the story teller aspect, though, and how the second half was based off of a fairy tale!

  4. I know! I'm sorry this one didn't work for you. I've been wanting to read it, but this is the first review I've actually seen for it. Bummer! I might try borrowing a copy from my library first to see if I like it!

"The dodgy pronouns still had me convinced I was walking right into Ron Weasley's worst nightmare." -- I love this!

  6. Sorry this was a let down. Like you, I was excited to read it. Now I'm glad I didn't impulse buy it at Walmart when I saw it. I think I'll just grab it from the library if I ever decide to give it a go.

  8. Oh no! I'm so sorry this one turned out to be a disappointment for you, Erica - the writing doesn't sound like something I would enjoy either (despite the fact I've heard so much hype). I'm not sure it's worth the investment for me now. :(

I hope your next book will be better and more enjoyable! :)

  11. I wasn't too fond of the lead character in this one myself. I ultimately gave this one three stars, but that was mostly motivated by how much I like the fairy tale stories sprinkled in.

    1. Yeah definitely! I wish there had been more fairy tales... They kind of felt rushed. Maybe they'll dive deeper in book two!

  12. Honestly, I keep hearing hype of this book, and it's never interested in me. It's refreshing to see a negative review for once! Better luck with your next read, Erica. :)

  14. I have an ARC of this one and I have yet to pick it up. Thankfully I won it so I don't feel rushed, but based on this review I definitely have to wait until I feel inspired. Thank you for sharing.
