[Short Story Review] Help Me Follow My Sister Into the Land of the Dead by Carmen Maria Machado

Short Story Review of Help Me Follow My Sister Into the Land of the Dead by Carmen Maria Machado

Help Me Follow My Sister Into the Land of the Dead by Carmen Maria Machado is an interesting short story set up in the format of a GoFundMe page.

I received a print copy through PageHabit... I was happy to have read this story. However, I wouldn't have labeled it horror, which is the box that I had gotten... So that was a bit of a let down.

But anyway! Let's dive in!

Help Me Follow My Sister Into the Land of the Dead by Carmen Maria Machado

Synopsis:
Ursula must find her sister Olive, even if she has to go to The Land of the Dead to find her. Something terrible has happened, and she can’t just text her sister. Ursula comes up with a plan for a Gofundme page, where she requests the money necessary to pay her passage to the other side. Using her credit card and the meager donations, Ursula finally arrives on the other side. A development to the story will change everything for Ursula and Olive. Sibling love is tested and proved in this deliciously horrific tale of an unusual family reunion.

My thoughts:
This was an interesting story! I liked that the format was a GoFundMe page.

As a result, the book followed along with the elements of the page; number of backers, amount pledged, how many days are left in the campaign, a description (which included the backstory), a quick FAQ (that dives a little deeper into the back story), the pledge amounts broken out by dollar amount and the gifts that go along with them, the updates that guided us through the story, and then finally the comments that end it.

This is a very quick read; I think it took me just ten minutes to read. I did enjoy it, but didn't love it. However, I would definitely recommend checking it out.

Thanks for reading!

  1. I've not read any of the smaller stories I received in my Page Habit boxes. In fact, I recently canceled because I wasn't sure the box was worth the money. Decided to let it go and keep my Nocturnal Readers box. This does sounds like an interesting format though.

    1. Yeah... I only got that one box and then cancelled. The one I got was just a bunch of junk. I definitely want to check out the Nocturnal Readers box though!! :)

    1. Yeah... I think I was just expecting it to be scary since it was from the Horror box. Oh well! It was still a fun read :)
