[Book Blogger Hop] August 18th - 24th

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop is a weekly meme hosted by Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer, where you answer a question and join a "hop". The purpose is to help bloggers discover and get to know one another.

For this week's question, Maria @ A Night's Dream of Books asks:
When you enter an unfamiliar house or apartment for the first time, do you feel disappointed if you don't see any bookshelves, or books on the coffee table?

My answer:
No, not at all! I don't judge people based on their personal hobbies or what their purchasing habits allow because that is absolutely none of my business.

With books, you never know what the story is. Perhaps they have a eReader. Perhaps the books are in a bedroom or another private room. Perhaps they rely on their local library. Perhaps they just had to sell a bunch because money is tight...

I personally have some books in the main living area, but I also have many upstairs in the bedroom simply because of space. And I have a number of books on my Kindle. Overall, my collection is still quite small because I've had to downsize a number of times when I moved around or desperately needed money while in college.

I would really hate to think that someone walking into our place would "judge" me based on what books they see/don't see. If those people were vocal about it, they certainly wouldn't be invited back.

Of course, when I walk into a new apartment and DO see a bookshelf, I am immediately drawn to it. :)

I just think judging people based on silly things like this is so unnecessary.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Great answer! Mine is because space is taken up by kid's toys and books. My books are hidden away also so little hands don't wreck them. And my kindle is a big part of my library, too...2,000+ books. I might have a problem lol :) love your blog.

  2. Yes I totally agree! My local library is a major source for many of my reads followed by e-books. But I do love seeing other people's bookshelves - it is exciting to find out what books they enjoy.

    1. I'd say a solid 95% of my reading is from library books :) And definitely! :) I creep on my friends bookshelves all the time when I visit them. But I don't judge what they own/enjoy. Thanks for stopping by!

  3. 100% agree E. Judging people based off their book collection seems petty. But I am the same way, I'm drawn to the books if someone does have them! :)

  5. Totally agree, and yes if someone DOES have bookshelves or books I always am curious to see what they've got! My cousin who recently got married had Christmas for the first time last year, and I noticed when we went into their new house they had a few of the same books as we did in their display. That was kinda cool. :)

    1. That's awesome! :) I went to a friends apartment for the first time a few months ago. They had an incredible bookshelf from Ikea. When I saw it, I immediately went over and said how much I loved the shelves! They had a wonderful book selection as well!

  6. Great answer Erica. When I look in an unfamiliar house I do look and see if they have a bookshelves, but for me it is more of a curiosity and I just subconsciously look for them. But I don't judge them if they don't have any books in there house and it is absolutely ok for them to not have any books. Because I know that not anybody are readers like me. But I totally agree with you that people should not judge you about what books you have on your bookshelves, and I would also most certainly won't invite them back to my apt either, Thank you so much for the awesome post Erica.
